Memory, given light again

MISHKAH opens 15 December.

One message in November so you can order first, one the day we open. Nothing else.

If you already know.

The method

Four decisions make every piece.

  1. 01 Gold draws The form is built from line, never decorated with it.
  2. 02 Color lives One field of enamel, fired flat, doing the work of many.
  3. 03 Space reveals What is left open is a material, not a gap.
  4. 04 Order remembers The same geometry on every reverse — the side only you see.

Twelve objects.
One language.

Nothing ends at the back.

  • The Fish
  • The Arc
  • The Pomegranate
  • The Tree
  • The Seed
  • The Eye
  • The Hand
  • The Heart
  • The Jasmine
  • The Fig
  • The Dawn
  • The Vessel

One of these three

Every piece has two faces.

One of the three she is wearing is a reverse. Color on one side, engraved gold on the other, and nobody can tell which unless she wants them to.

The Eye, worn in sunlight.

Where it comes from

A language of geometry, plaster and light.

Tilework, cut and set by hand
A muqarnas star, opening to the light
Carved plaster above painted tile
Light coming through a pierced screen
The vault of a hall

The collection

Twelve ways memory survives.

Each front was drawn for its own reason. Every reverse is the same geometry, cut to the shape of the piece.

Designed and made in Andalusia — by hand, in a small artisans’ workshop outside Granada.

All twelve pieces, fronts, laid out in sunlight.
  1. 01 The Fish flow through absence
  2. 02 The Arc identity through absence
  3. 03 The Pomegranate abundance through architectural absence
  4. 04 The Tree growth between matter and absence
  5. 05 The Seed beginning against absence
  6. 06 The Eye sight through absence
  7. 07 The Hand protection through absence
  8. 08 The Heart love through absence
  9. 09 The Jasmine return through absence
  10. 10 The Fig sweetness through absence
  11. 11 The Dawn light through absence
  12. 12 The Vessel keeping against absence
Three chain lengths: the Seed, the Fish, the Vessel.

The second face

Finished on both sides.

An object worn close to the body is never seen from one direction only. The reverse is engraved, unglazed, quiet enough for the days you do not want color. Wear the color when you want to be seen. Wear the gold when you want to be still.

All twelve in sunlight, several of them turned to the engraved reverse.
All twelve. Some of them turned.
The Seed, reverse, worn.

Worn

Layered, mixed, turned around.

Twelve pieces, twenty-four faces, three chain lengths. Some of these are fronts. Some are backs.

The Heart, the Vessel and the Pomegranate here are reverses, worn as fronts.

Order before anyone else.

Leave your email and we will write to you a month before we open, so you can order first.

A carved stone face with a cobalt iris.

An ancient gaze

It didn’t begin with jewelry.

It began with looking.

What remains?

  • Civilizations disappear.
  • Objects break.
  • People leave.
  • Landscapes change.
  • Stories are inherited imperfectly.
  • And still — something remains.

A gaze. A relationship. A symbol. A fragment.
A memory waiting for light.

An ivory-plaster room with one tall opening, and the Seed lying in the pool of sunlight.

مشكاة

MISHKAH

mish · kah · Arabic, noun

The niche cut into a wall to hold a lamp.

A place made to hold light.

The name described what I was trying to make before I knew how to describe it myself. Something that could hold what remains, and give it light again.

We don’t recreate the past.
We ask what it can become.

Three chains: the Eye, the Fig, the Jasmine reversed.

Before the first piece

Before there were twelve pieces,
there were hundreds of questions.

Sketches, rejected versions, dimension questions and color tests for the Eye.

Looking became seeking.

  • Travel.
  • Read.
  • Question.
  • Draw.
  • Erase.
  • Again.
Working sheet: the Eye redrawn, measured and questioned.
  • One form.
  • Again.
  • And again.
  • And again.

There are three doors I can open and feel my heart sit down. One in Canada, one in Jordan, one in Spain. Andalusia kept the key.

My family is Palestinian. I grew up among olive trees and fig trees, on the smell of rain before you can see it, under the kind of moon that makes a room go quiet. I have never stopped loving anything that grows slowly.

For twenty years I built businesses. You buy something, you sell it for more, you begin again — and you become very good at it, and one morning it is not enough. I did not want to leave behind a column of numbers. I wanted to leave something small enough to hold in a hand and stubborn enough to outlast me: an object carrying a feeling I could not say out loud any other way.

I trained as an engineer, long before any of this, which is probably why a millimeter matters to me. And much later I studied jewelry and fashion design properly — because wanting to make something is not the same as knowing how.

I find God in details. I find love in details. I find peace in details. That is the whole of it. Either the millimeter matters, or nothing does.

Would I want to wear it if I knew none of the story?

If the answer was no, it wasn’t finished. Days spent deciding whether an opening should stay empty, whether a red had gone too warm, whether meaning had overtaken beauty — or beauty had overtaken meaning.
